Citizens for Modern Transit: Transforming St. Louis Transit Stops with Bench Installations
What started as a simple idea to improve bus stops has grown into a transformative movement. Citizens for Modern Transit (CMT), in partnership with AARP in St. Louis, St. Clair County Transit District, Metro Transit, and local officials, launched the “Story of a Bench” program in April 2025. This initiative aimed to enhance rider experiences at bus stops often lacking seating.
A Growing Impact: From Five to Seven Benches in One Year
Initially, the program set a goal of installing five benches in its first year. However, it exceeded expectations by completing seven installations across the bi-state region. These bright red, all-weather benches feature the slogan “Enjoy the Ride,” a sponsor plaque, and a QR code. Riders can use the QR code to share how the benches have improved their transit experience.
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Riders report that the benches ease physical and mental stress, especially after long days or while carrying groceries. One rider shared, “It’s convenient, affordable, well-connected, SAFE, environmentally responsible, and allows me to drink my coffee in the morning and disconnect on the way home.”
Enhancing Transit Stops Beyond Benches
The program’s success has inspired additional investments. St. Clair County Transit District added concrete pads and trash receptacles. Swansea Mayor Jeff Parker and the Village of Swansea invested $30,000 in bus shelters to cover the benches. Similar enhancements are underway in East St. Louis, where a shelter has been added to a bench location.

Expanding the Program in 2026
Looking ahead, CMT and its partners are planning four more bench installations. These include three along Manchester Road in Maplewood, Missouri, and one in Fairview Heights, Illinois. The program’s CEO, Kimberly Cella, emphasized its significance, stating, “This program exemplifies how small, thoughtful interventions can yield profound impacts, making transit stops more than just pass-through points by becoming places of rest, connection, and community.”
How to Get Involved
CMT and AARP in St. Louis are seeking additional partners to support the program. Businesses, organizations, municipalities, and individuals can sponsor a bench for $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the location. Sponsors receive recognition on a commemorative plaque at each bench.

This initiative is a testament to how small changes can create a big difference in public transit, fostering comfort, accessibility, and community engagement.
