From Summer Tragedy to Real Healing: How East St. Louis Parents, Youth, and Civic Leaders Are Confronting Trauma Together

In the wake of heartbreaking summer shootings involving teens, East St. Louis is responding with action. Community partners, law enforcement, and mental health agencies are hosting a two-part healing rally and youth summit to give families the tools, resources, and safe spaces they need to rebuild.

Overview: Following a wave of tragic summer gun violence involving youth, East St. Louis civic organizations, regional law enforcement, and mental health providers have organized a coordinated two-part intervention: the Parent & Youth Family Rally on Friday, September 11, at the Mary Brown Center, followed by a closed-door Parent & Teen Summit on Saturday, September 12, at the SIUE Wyvetter H. Younge Higher Education Campus. This initiative moves past reactive grief to offer direct behavioral health access, family resources, and private spaces for teens and parents to unpack trauma and rebuild neighborhood stability.

July left scars on East St. Louis that numbers alone cannot capture. When teen suspects opened fire earlier this summer, one family was shattered by death and injuries, while an elderly neighbor lost his life. Ever since, our neighborhoods have wrestled with the hardest questions imaginable: Why are kids pulling triggers, and how do we rebuild broken families before another funeral gets scheduled?

The answer does not lie in silence or pointing fingers. Real community turnaround starts when law enforcement, mental health counselors, civic organizers, and families sit in the exact same room to solve problems together.

To bridge that gap, 40 Days of Nonviolence & Beyond has teamed up with regional service agencies, local police departments, and mental health professionals to host the Parent & Youth Family Rally this Friday. The goal is simple. Bring parents, kids, and neighbors together for an afternoon of unity, practical resources, and honest conversation.

Building Stronger Families at the Mary Brown Center

Recovery requires joy just as much as it requires tough talk. The Friday rally delivers both. It gives local families a chance to connect with neighborhood support programs, meet the social workers and advocates working on our streets, and let children unwind in a safe environment.

Here is what you need to know to attend:

  • Event: The Parent & Youth Family Rally
  • Date & Time: Friday, September 11, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM
  • Location: Mary Brown Center, 606 South 15th Street, East St. Louis, IL 62207
  • What to Expect: Live music, free food, games for the kids, and direct access to family-strengthening programs

Taking the Next Step: The Parent & Teen Summit

Friday afternoon serves as an open door to a deeper conversation happening the very next morning. On Saturday, September 12, families are invited to the Parent & Teen Summit at the SIUE Wyvetter H. Younge Higher Education Campus starting at 10:00 AM.

Too often, parents and teenagers hold back their deepest struggles because they worry about judgment. The Summit creates dedicated, private breakout spaces for parents and youth to speak separately about the pressures dragging down academic performance, personal well-being, and family stability. To ensure everyone feels safe to speak candidly about trauma, mental health, and neighborhood safety, the Saturday summit remains strictly closed to the media.

Stopping street violence demands more than emergency room visits and grief. It requires continuous investment in our youth and immediate support for the parents raising them.

Bring your children, bring your questions, and join your neighbors this Friday.
