Empowering Kansas City Youth: KC Futures Youth Summit 2026

The KC Futures Youth Commission is taking a significant step to empower the city’s younger generation. They will host their first Youth Summit soon. This landmark event offers a vital platform for young people across Kansas City. Here, they can voice their opinions and collaborate directly with community leaders. Furthermore, the commission created this youth enrichment program with a specific goal. They want to ensure student ideas and concerns help shape the city’s future. The summit’s theme is “Our Voice, Our City, Our Future.” Consequently, it represents a major step in fostering early civic engagement. It also aims to build a more inclusive community.

The commission partnered with the Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA) and Focus KC for this event. Therefore, the summit promises a day of dynamic discussion and collaboration. Organizers invite high school students from grades 9–12 to the KC Convention Center. The event takes place on Friday, January 23, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This event is not just a meeting. Instead, it is a movement designed to give Kansas City’s youth a tangible role in local governance.

A New Platform for Youth Engagement

The KC Futures Youth Summit serves as more than just a one-day event. In fact, it acts as the cornerstone of a broader initiative. This initiative aims to integrate young voices into local decision-making. The KC Futures Commission operates as a leadership program. Members meet regularly to tackle important issues. Additionally, they learn about city processes and develop policy ideas. These ideas reflect their lived experiences. The commission believes strongly in early involvement. When young people participate in civic life early, they become informed citizens. As a result, they can drive positive change.

Bridging the Gap Between Youth and Leaders

A primary goal of the summit involves bridging the gap between Kansas City’s youth and established leaders. Therefore, the event features structured discussions. These discussions center on key focus areas identified by the Youth Commission:

  • Youth-Friendly Spaces: We will explore what makes a city welcoming for young people.
  • Violence Prevention: Participants will discuss solutions to create safer communities.
  • Mental Health and Substance Abuse: We must address critical health issues facing today’s youth.
  • Quality Education: Students will share ideas to improve learning experiences.

These conversations aim to be collaborative. Thus, students can share their perspectives. They will also work alongside leaders to brainstorm real, actionable solutions.

What to Expect at the Summit

Attendees can expect a full day of engagement and inspiration. The summit provides a unique opportunity for students. They can connect with peers from different schools who share a passion for community improvement. Additionally, the agenda includes activities designed to foster dialogue and creativity. Participants will receive lunch and event swag to commemorate their involvement.

The summit is open to all high school students in the metro area. Moreover, you do not need to be a member of the KC Futures Commission to attend. This inclusive approach ensures representation for a wide range of voices and experiences.

How to Get Involved in This Youth Enrichment Program

Participation is simple. Students interested in attending the first KC Futures Youth Summit can register online. Many high schools across the metro have already committed to sending delegations. However, organizers strongly encourage individual students to sign up too.
