April is National Minority Health Awareness Month, a time to spotlight health disparities affecting minority communities. Among these, colon cancer stands out as a silent crisis. Black Americans diagnosed with colorectal cancer face a 35-40% higher risk of death, making early detection and prevention critical.

The Empowerment Network, a St. Louis-based organization dedicated to supporting men through prostate and colorectal cancer journeys, is hosting a special event to address this pressing issue.

Early Detection Saves Lives

Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when detected early. Regular screenings, such as colonoscopies, can identify precancerous polyps before they develop into cancer. Despite this, many in the Black community face barriers to access, awareness, and trust in healthcare systems.

Key Facts About Colon Cancer:

  • Higher Mortality Rates: Black Americans are disproportionately affected.
  • Screening Recommendations: Begin screenings at age 45 or earlier if there’s a family history.
  • Prevention: A healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking can reduce risks.
