Human Dignity Is Non-Negotiable: Promena CEO Speaks Out
Today, I am speaking not just as the CEO of Promena, but as a human being deeply concerned about human dignity and immigrant safety. What we are currently witnessing in this country is neither normal nor acceptable, and it requires our immediate attention.
A soloist recently shared a simple truth that has stayed with me: āWhat happens to you, it matters to me.ā Last night, as I listened to the many messages of leaders on a national faith call to action, I heard that same truth spoken repeatedly through grief, courage, and an insistence that human dignity is not negotiable.
I am a staunch believer in inclusion and belonging. However, I want to be clear: these are not just āworkplace values.ā They are community values. Consequently, they are what we owe one another as neighbors and as human beingsāregardless of where you are in the world.
The Threat to Human Dignity and Immigrant Safety
Across the United States, immigrants and their families are facing escalating cruelty. From raids and detention to fear in neighborhoods, a level of force is tearing at the fabric of our communities. Furthermore, immigrants represent every ethnicity and race. They are Black and brown, Asian, Indigenous, and white. They are our neighbors, our coworkers, our classmates, and our loved ones. They are part of āAmerica,ā not apart from it.
When violence spills over into the lives of American citizens, or when people are harmed or killed in the course of immigration enforcement, we have crossed a line. This reality should stop every one of us in our tracks. Today, we remember all the lives lost. We hold close the families who are grieving. Ultimately, we refuse to accept a world where people become collateral damage.
Why Funding Decisions Impact Human Dignity and Immigrant Safety
This week, the U.S. Senate is considering a major funding package that includes money for the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Funding decisions are moral decisions. No agency should receive a blank check for harm. If our tax dollars expand detention, deepen fear, and fuel violence, then our government is choosing cruelty over community.
We must also name what is true: fear-driven enforcement doesnāt make us safer. On the contrary, it makes people afraid to report crimes, afraid to seek medical care, and afraid to send their kids to school. It fractures trustāand the cost of that fracture is measured in real lives.
We are back to what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called the fierce urgency of now. This is a moment that asks something of all of us. Not later. Not when itās convenient. Now.
A Call to Action for Human Dignity and Immigrant Safety
If you are reading this, please donāt look away. Write or call your members of Congress todayāyour Representative and both Senators.
Tell them:
- What is important to you.
- Protect due process and human rights.
- Invest in community-based support and lawful, humane immigration systemsānot intimidation and detention.
While we can disagree on policy, we cannot compromise on dignity.
