What Has Ilhan Omar Done to Face Such Persecution?
In recent weeks, Minnesota has become the center of a disturbing campaign. This is not about policy—it is persecution. President Donald Trump, along with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Justice Department, has actively targeted the Somali community and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. They have demonized entire families by calling them “garbage,” demanded they “go back,” and planned sweeps of immigrant communities. These actions clearly reflect racial scapegoating.
Ilhan Omar News: The Somali-American Community in Minnesota
Minnesota proudly hosts one of the largest Somali-American populations in the United States. Many Somali Minnesotans arrived as refugees fleeing war and chaos. Over time, they have transformed their migration into meaningful economic, social, and civic contributions. Somali Americans own businesses, work in essential roles, and strengthen communities across the Twin Cities region.
Generations of Somali families now live, work, and raise children in neighborhoods around St. Paul and Minneapolis. According to recent reports, nearly 58% of Somalis in Minnesota were born in the U.S. Additionally, 87% of foreign-born Somali Minnesotans have become naturalized U.S. citizens. Nationally, immigrants, including Somali Americans, represent over 50 million people, accounting for 15.4% of the U.S. population as of 2025, according to the Pew Research Center.
Why Target Somalis? The Chilling Logic of Racism
Why are Somali Americans being targeted? The answer lies in a familiar and chilling pattern: demonize an entire group, reduce them to “vermin,” and criminalize their presence. This strategy mirrors propaganda from some of history’s darkest chapters, where entire communities were stripped of their rights and victimized. It is racism, plain and simple.
Research consistently debunks the myths surrounding immigrant communities. Studies show that immigrants, including Somali Americans, do not commit more crimes than native-born Americans. In fact, areas with growing immigrant populations often experience declines in violent and property crime. Despite these facts, the Somali community continues to face baseless accusations and targeted persecution.
The Silence of Justice Advocates
Even more troubling is the silence from those who claim to stand for justice. Feminist groups, faith-based congregations, Christians, and progressives have largely remained quiet as these attacks unfold. This silence undermines the very principles of justice and equality they claim to uphold.
I have spent time worshiping, sharing meals, and praying with Somali brothers and sisters in Minneapolis. Their dignity, hard work, and care for neighbors are evident in everything they do. They embody compassion, hustle, and communal love. Yet, they are met with hostility and exclusion.
Ilhan Omar News: A Call to Action
As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” If we remain silent now—when Somali families are told they do not belong, and when Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is attacked for her faith and origin—we betray our moral conscience.
I stand with Ilhan Omar…the Somali community. I stand with every family facing hate, exclusion, and state-sanctioned fear. This is America—a house with many rooms. When one room burns, the whole house cries out. We must not let cowardice wrapped in the American flag drown out our collective humanity.
