Sold Out in the Sanctuary: How Haley Stevens Handed Michigan to Trump’s Pick

Just forty-eight hours before an election that could flip control of the U.S. Senate, Rep. Haley Stevens stunned allies by walking into a prominent Detroit Black church and walking out with an endorsement for Trump-backed Republican Mike Rogers. With staff resignations mounting and national party leaders calling it outright betrayal, the spotlight turns directly to whether Detroit voters will respond where it counts most: the ballot box.

Overview: Two days before Election Day, Representative Haley Stevens delivered a stunning blow to Michigan Democrats by endorsing Trump-backed Republican Mike Rogers outside Detroit’s Perfecting Church. The move shattered prior unity commitments to Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed, triggered the immediate mass resignation of Stevens’ congressional staff, and set off fierce backlash from Democratic leadership as both parties battle for razor-thin margins that will decide control of the United States Senate.

A Supreme Act of Betrayal

Two days before an election that decides control of the United States Senate, Rep. Haley Stevens walked into a historic Black church in Detroit and handed a Trump-backed Republican the gift of her endorsement.

Stevens and Mike Rogers sat side by side during Sunday services at Perfecting Church. Minutes later, right outside the doors, she endorsed Rogers for the open Michigan Senate seat.

The location turns political opportunism into something far worse.

Michigan Democrats had spent days organizing a unity rally at a Detroit church featuring South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn to energize Black voter turnout for Abdul El-Sayed. Instead of solidarity, worshippers walked into a carefully staged political ambush. Black voters in Detroit carry the Democratic ticket in Michigan cycle after cycle. They deserve real respect, not to be treated as backdrop props for a photo op.

A Calculated Deception Behind Closed Doors

The timeline reveals how deliberate this shift was.

When her own senior staff warned her last week to avoid backing Rogers, Stevens dismissed their concerns over text: “Omg why would you think I would do that??!!”

At midnight Saturday, she gave explicit assurances to key party allies that she remained fully committed to El-Sayed. Hours later, she broke every single one of those promises.

Reporters asked repeatedly what altered her calculus between Saturday night and Sunday morning. She offered no credible explanation. Her staff delivered their own verdict on the spot: they resigned in protest.

Stevens claimed the El-Sayed campaign disinvited her and expressed discomfort with who the campaign associated with. Primary battles leave bruises, and personal rivalries run deep in state politics. But Stevens had publicly pledged to back the nominee to defend the Senate majority. A firm commitment made to voters and community leaders does not expire simply because personal feelings were hurt.

Look at Her Own Record on Mike Rogers

What makes this reversal indefensible is Stevens’ own paper trail.

Launching her Senate bid in April 2025, she stated plainly that Rogers “does not have our backs, and I am the person to beat him.” On August 1, she doubled down, warning voters that Rogers would operate as “another rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s dangerous agenda.”

Mike Rogers has not shifted an inch. He still carries Donald Trump’s full endorsement. He campaigns on carrying Trump’s legislative playbook straight to Capitol Hill. Rogers remains the exact same corporate conservative he has always been.

The only variable that changed was Haley Stevens.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called the move a “despicable betrayal,” reaffirming that Senate Democrats stand entirely with El-Sayed against a candidate backed by billionaire donors. Schumer is right. This maneuver has nothing to do with personal conscience. It was a calculated move designed to inflict maximum damage on the Democratic coalition at the finish line.

The Real Power Rests With Michigan Voters

Haley Stevens gets one vote. She does not decide the balance of the United States Senate. Michigan voters do.

Betrayal demands an unmistakable response at the ballot box.

Election Day is tomorrow, Tuesday, November 3. Confirm your local polling precinct immediately. Call your neighbors, your congregation, your coworkers, and your relatives. Set up ride shares for seniors and working parents who need transportation to the polls.

Every single vote matters. The last competitive Michigan Senate race was settled by just 19,000 votes statewide. A fraction of a percentage point will determine the majority in Washington.

One career politician chose to break her word. Millions of Michigan voters can keep theirs. Get to the polls and vote.
