Shante Duncan: From Grassroots Leader to Senator of Missouri Hopeful
Shante Duncan, a North St. Louis native, is turning her passion for community into a bold run for Senator of Missouri. Known for her grassroots advocacy and dedication to empowering women and girls, Duncan’s journey from community leader to political candidate is a testament to her commitment to creating meaningful change. Let’s explore her inspiring story and vision for Missouri.
A Foundation Built on Community and Leadership
Born and raised in the JVL neighborhood of North St. Louis, Duncan’s upbringing was shaped by strong women in her family. Surrounded by her grandmother and aunts, she learned the values of discipline, wisdom, and community. These early lessons became the foundation for her life’s work.
In her early 20s, Duncan founded Sisters Helping Each Other Reach A Higher Height (S.H.E.R.A.H.), an organization dedicated to healing and empowering women and girls of color. Over the years, S.H.E.R.A.H. has supported more than 6,000 women and girls, helping them recover from trauma and develop leadership skills. Duncan’s philosophy is simple yet profound: when you heal a woman, you heal a nation.
From Grassroots Advocacy to Political Ambition
Duncan’s entry into politics was not planned but evolved naturally through her nonprofit work. While volunteering on a State Representative campaign, she excelled at grassroots outreach, engaging residents and listening to their concerns. Her effectiveness led to a role as a field director, marking the start of her political journey.
Building on this experience, Duncan launched her own LLC, where she formed field teams and worked as an independent campaign consultant. Alongside her political work, she honed her skills in grant writing and development, contributing to organizations like the St. Louis Area Foodbank.
Why Shante Duncan is Running for Senator of Missouri
Duncan’s decision to run for State Senate was driven by her deep connection to the community and her desire to address systemic issues. She explained, “I was one of the people who said I would never run for office because of how dirty politics are. But being in the community and on the ground for so long, you begin to understand that people who care are the ones who need to be in those seats.”
Her campaign focuses on three key priorities:
- Education: Advocating for equitable access to quality education.
- Small Businesses: Supporting local entrepreneurs and fostering economic growth.
- Affordable Housing: Addressing the housing crisis in District 14 and ensuring safe, affordable living conditions.
A Unique Perspective in the Race
In a crowded Democratic primary, Duncan stands out as a candidate with lived experience and a grassroots background. She emphasizes her identity as an everyday person, a mother, and a community advocate. “I’m not a wealthy person. I’m an everyday person like most people in the community,” she shared. “I’ve proven that even with small resources, I can get things done.”
Her role as a mother deeply influences her approach to policymaking. “Because I care about my children, I will care about their children as well,” she said. This perspective shapes her commitment to creating a better future for all families in Missouri.
Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Strength
Duncan candidly acknowledges the challenges she has faced, including overcoming self-doubt. “The hardest part was understanding that I am just as worthy as any other candidate,” she said. Despite these obstacles, she remains confident in her ability to serve as a strong and effective senator.
Her greatest accomplishment, she believes, lies in the people she has inspired and supported throughout her journey. “Regardless of the outcome, I know I’m on the right path,” she reflected.
A Vision for Missouri’s Future
Duncan’s campaign is rooted in transparency, accessibility, and collaboration with grassroots organizations. She believes that state government must partner with true grassroots leaders to create lasting change. “There are tons of grassroots organizations doing the work every day. They need to be at the table,” she emphasized.
When asked why voters should choose her, Duncan’s response is simple yet powerful: “Because I am you. Everybody knows a Shante Duncan—just a sister from the community trying to make a better life for all of us.”
