Transforming Vacant Spaces into Vibrant Destinations

Kansas City, in partnership with the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City (EDCKC), has launched the Open Doors! program to activate vacant storefronts across the city. This initiative connects over 20 local businesses, artists, and organizations to high-traffic locations, ensuring they thrive during the FIFA World Cup 2026™.

Mayor Quinton Lucas emphasized the program’s impact:
“Kansas City is a city of makers, creators, and entrepreneurs. By linking businesses to storefronts, we’re turning global attention into real, lasting economic opportunity for the people who call Kansas City home.”

Key Features of the Open Doors! Program

The Open Doors! program is part of the broader City of Entrepreneurs platform, designed to lower barriers for small businesses and foster long-term growth. Key features include:

  • Short-term, subsidized storefront opportunities (3–6 months).
  • Working capital grants for build-out and operations.
  • Technical assistance in legal, marketing, finance, and business development.
  • Access to high-traffic locations during the World Cup.

These elements create a launchpad for businesses to test concepts, expand their reach, and build sustainability.

  • Retail and fashion.
  • Food and beverage.

To enhance accessibility, businesses will be featured in a Small Business Guide developed with Airbnb, helping visitors discover local gems during their stay.

Why Open Doors! Matters

Assistant Director Nia Webster of the Neighborhood Services Department highlighted the program’s significance:
“Open Doors! is about access and visibility. We’re creating real opportunities for businesses to step into high-traffic spaces, connect with new customers, and build momentum that lasts beyond the World Cup.”
