There is no shortage of talent in the NBA, and this season will prove that. There are players at each position that excel and impact their teams. Whether it is a point guard facilitating to their teammates, or a center dominating in the post, there is a star player in every position. The NBA season is here, and the top players of those positions have a chance to shine and lead their teams to victory.
This is the perfect opportunity to discuss the top players and what to expect from them this season. First up are the centers. Here are the top five centers in the league.
1.) Nikola Jokic
Nikola Jokic is no stranger to accolades. He has won three Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards, with his most recent being last season. This was also the season where he became the second player in NBA history to have at least 2,000 points, 900 rebounds, and 700 assists in a season. NBA legend Oscar Robertson was the first to do it. Before winning MVP that season, Jokic won in 2021 and 2022. He led the Denver Nuggets to a championship in 2023, and won Finals MVP that year. Jokic remains one of the league’s top players and possibly the league’s most unique center from a skill set point of view. He has the ability to pass like a point guard but can work in the post. He is quite the talent and this season, his team will look to win another championship. It will be a challenge, but if there is any player that can handle it, it is Jokic.
2.) Joel Embiid
Joel Embiid is a center with a game reminiscent of centers of the past. Embiid is similar to the centers that dominated in the post and used their size to their advantage. Players like Shaquille O’Neal, Wilt Chamberlain and others fit that mold. Embiid is the closest example to that in today’s game, and after years of trying to win a championship, this could be his year. The Sixers made moves such as bringing in Paul George, and they made quieter moves like bringing in Caleb Martin, Eric Gordon and Reggie Jackson. Embiid had a good season for the Sixers in 2023-24. He averaged 34.7 points, 11.0 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.2 steals. His averages in points, assists and steals that season were the best of his career so far.
Embiid was making a case for another MVP award (he won his first in 2023), but injuries prevented him from being in the running. This season, if he stays healthy, he and the Sixers could be on the verge of success.
3.) Anthony Davis
Anthony Davis is one of the best talents in the league. He makes an impact on both ends of the floor, and when he is healthy, he is tough to stop. Davis has remained a key player for the Los Angeles Lakers since joining them in 2019. He and the Lakers won a championship in 2020, and since then, Los Angeles has had to fight to even get in the playoffs (or have a deep playoff run). Davis had a solid season last year, as he averaged 24.7 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.3 blocks. He also played 76 games last season, which is the most games he has played in a single season. The Lakers are itching for another championship, and in order for that to happen, they need another strong, healthy season from Davis.
4.) Domantas Sabonis
Domantas Sabonis does not get the recognition that some of his peers get. However, he is a talented center that plays a key role in his team’s success. Sabonis had an impressive season in 2023-24. He averaged 19.4 points, 13.7 rebounds and 8.2 assists. All of these averages were career highs. He also played in all 82 games of the season. At one point of the season, Sabonis became the second player in NBA history with at least 20 points, 25 rebounds, five assists and a shooting percentage of 90 percent or better. Wilt Chamberlain did it first. Sabonis also managed to tally his 54th consecutive double-double later on.
Sabonis had a remarkable season, and after somewhat flying under the radar, he will get the love and recognition he deserves.
5.) Victor Wembanyama
Victor Wembanyama is the youngest player on this list, but he is known as an “Alien” for a reason. Wembanyama’s skill set is unique. He is a young, 7-foot-4 center whose game is a mixture of the NBA’s top talent such as Kevin Durant and others. Wembanyama is a threat on both ends of the floor and after his Rookie of the Year season, he can take it to the next level. He also has a veteran point guard in his corner. Chris Paul joined the San Antonio Spurs in the offseason, and with Paul’s experience and knowledge of the game, Wembanyama has a chance to flourish.
Although it is early in his career, Wembanyama is an exceptional center. And eventually, he could surpass others on this list.
The big man is still alive and well contrary to popular belief, and the players on this list, and a few that are not such as Jarrett Allen and Bam Adebayo are great examples.
