BELLEVILLE, Ill. (May 11, 2026) – In celebration of National Bike to Work Day, residents are invited to participate in a beginner-friendly “Pedal to Work” group bike ride on Friday, May 15, at 7:30 a.m., highlighting the ease of biking to work and connecting to transit. Hosted in conjunction with the St. Clair County Transit District and Citizens for Modern Transit, the ride will begin at the Belleville Transit Center, 718 Scheel St., and travel approximately two miles to the St. Clair County Courthouse area—making it an accessible option for riders of all experience levels.

“The short, flat route is designed to make biking to work approachable and enjoyable for everyone,” said Ken Sharkey, managing director of St. Clair County Transit District. “It’s a great way to experience how biking and transit can work together to create a healthier, more connected commute.”

A pop-up “Pit Stop” at the Belleville Transit Center will be open from 6:30 to 8 a.m., allowing morning commuters to fuel up before they roll out. Free granola bars, water, bike checks courtesy of The Cyclery, and information about the region’s 39-mile MetroBikeLink System and the GO TRAILing program will be available on-site.

Biking to work is made easy thanks to the MetroBikeLink System, which features 39 miles of interconnected bike trails in St. Clair County, Ill., that directly connect to six Metro Transit Centers—offering seamless integration between biking and MetroLink or MetroBus to reach thousands of workplaces across the bi-state region. The main artery of the MetroBikeLink System is a trail running adjacent to the MetroLink alignment. It begins at the Shiloh-Scott Transit Center and extends 14 miles, connecting the College, Belleville, Swansea, Memorial Hospital and Fairview Heights Transit Centers. A seventh station will soon be added, as a 5-mile trail nears completion as part of the MetroLink expansion to MidAmerica St. Louis Airport. The summerlong GO TRAILing program allows individuals to earn prizes for tracking miles spent walking, biking and running on the system through Aug. 8—including miles logged commuting to and from work.

The “Pedal to Work” group ride will be led by an experienced bike commuter. No formal registration is required. To learn more, visit www.scctd.org.
