Guy Torry Comedy for a Cause: Star Gives Back to St. Louis Schools
ST. LOUIS, MO — Laughter has always been one of the most powerful ways to bring people together, but when that laughter is attached to a meaningful cause, its impact can extend far beyond the stage.
Legendary comedian, actor, and St. Louis native Guy Torry is returning to his roots to headline and host “Comedy for a Cause,” a special fundraising event taking place Sunday, November 8, 2026, at 6 p.m. at the Keating Theatre inside Kirkwood High School.
Presented by Kirkwood Teachers of Color (KTOC), in partnership with the Kirkwood School District Foundation, the evening will bring together nationally recognized entertainers and community supporters to raise funds for the Kirkwood Teachers of Color Scholarship.
Joining Torry onstage will be B-Phlat, Malena Smith, Larry Greene, Tim Convy, and DJ Vthom, promising an unforgettable evening filled with entertainment, laughter, and community unity. But for Torry, this event is about something much bigger than delivering punchlines.
A Family Connection with a Powerful Purpose
During my exclusive interview with Torry, I asked what inspired him to participate in the event and why this particular cause was so meaningful to him.
In true comedic fashion, Torry immediately responded with a joke.
“My sister threatened to let out my family secrets. That’s why I’m doing it for free. She is blackmailing me,” Torry joked.
However, behind the laughter was a heartfelt explanation.
“Naw, but fa real. My sister, Coach Roberta McWoods, is a retired educator in the Kirkwood School District. This is the first time she is doing an event like this to raise money for teachers of color in the Kirkwood School District. It helps keep teachers in the Kirkwood School District and also scholarships for the students of color in the Kirkwood School District.”
His response revealed that the event is not simply another performance on his schedule. It is a family-driven effort rooted in education, opportunity, and the importance of investing in future generations. Established in 2020, the Kirkwood Teachers of Color Scholarship supports graduating Kirkwood High School seniors who identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC), maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA, and plan to pursue education at a two-year or four-year institution, technical school, or trade program.
All proceeds from the comedy event will directly support the KTOC Named Award through the Kirkwood School District Foundation.
Using His God-Given Gift to Give Back
Throughout his career, Torry has established himself as one of the entertainment industry’s respected comedic talents.
With film credits including American History X, Life, Pearl Harbor, and Runaway Jury, Torry has demonstrated his versatility as both an actor and comedian.
He is also widely recognized for creating the groundbreaking Phat Tuesdays comedy showcase at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles, a platform that helped provide opportunities and exposure for Black comedians. Its cultural impact was later explored in the Amazon Prime Video documentary series Phat Tuesdays: The Era of Hip Hop Comedy.
Despite his Hollywood accomplishments, Torry remains grounded in the importance of service.
I asked him how important it is for successful entertainers to use their platforms to open doors for young people facing obstacles in education and life.
“That’s the gift that God gave me to give back. And giving back is something our parents raised us on. That’s the assignment that we get from up above to do that. And the gift of comedy is my gift, so I’m going to give back through my gift,” Torry explained.
His words reflected a philosophy that success carries responsibility. For Torry, comedy is not simply a profession. It is an opportunity to serve others through the talent he believes God entrusted to him.
Laughter Is More Than Entertainment — It’s Healing
At a time when communities across America continue to navigate social divisions, economic challenges, and everyday pressures, comedy remains a powerful source of connection.
During our conversation, I asked Torry whether he believed laughter could help bridge some of the divisions society is experiencing.
“Of course. Laughter purifies the air. It’s good for the soul. Where would the world be without us giving that prescription? Laughter heals. It makes you feel good,” Torry stated. His perspective speaks to something audiences have experienced for generations: the ability of comedy to provide temporary relief from life’s difficulties while bringing people from different backgrounds together through shared experiences.
And on November 8, that shared laughter will also help support educational opportunities for Kirkwood students.
Redefining Success for the Next Generation
One of the most important aspects of the Kirkwood Teachers of Color Scholarship is its recognition that success does not follow a single path. Whether students pursue traditional college degrees, technical training, or skilled trades, the scholarship recognizes the value of different educational and professional journeys. I asked Torry why it is important for young people to understand that success has more than one definition.
“Success has many definitions. In God’s eyes there are no big blessings or little blessings. They are just blessings,” Torry responded.
It was a simple yet powerful statement, emphasizing that achievement should not be measured solely by fame, wealth, or professional titles. For young people working toward their dreams, his message serves as a reminder that every accomplishment has value.
A Night of Comedy That Gives Back
With general admission tickets priced at just $25, Comedy for a Cause offers an affordable opportunity for residents throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area to enjoy nationally recognized comedic talent while contributing to a meaningful community initiative. When I asked Torry what he would say to someone still deciding whether to attend, he didn’t hesitate to deliver a confident and humorous invitation. “It’s a great date spot. Women love to laugh. Comedy heals. It’s laughter. We are going to loosen the people up and everyone will have fun. I guarantee it,” Torry said.
Along with the comedy performances, attendees will have an opportunity to participate in a 50/50 raffle, with tickets available online and on-site.
The event is recommended for audiences ages 18 and older.
Beyond Hollywood: The Legacy Guy Torry Wants to Leave Behind
Perhaps the most profound moment of our conversation came when I moved away from Hollywood, comedy, and the upcoming fundraiser to ask Torry a question about his legacy.
I asked him what he wanted people to remember about Guy Torry when his time on this earth was over. His response was brief, humble, and deeply rooted in his faith.
“That I was a child of God and I did the best I could to be a servant and make Him proud.”
For a man who has spent decades entertaining audiences, working in Hollywood, and helping create opportunities for other comedians, his answer spoke volumes. He didn’t mention movie credits, sold-out performances, celebrity friendships, or industry recognition. Instead, he focused on faith, service, and the desire to make a positive difference. And perhaps that is what makes Comedy for a Cause such a fitting reflection of his personal philosophy. Through laughter, Torry is helping transform a night of entertainment into an investment in education, opportunity, and the future of his hometown community. Because sometimes, the greatest legacy an entertainer can leave behind isn’t the number of people they made laugh.
It’s the number of lives they helped change along the way.
