In one of the latest controversies surrounding the 2020 election fraud conspiracy theory, a long conversation was uncovered Thursday between the Conservative activist Ginni Thomas and the former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows in which the former urged the Trump White House official to help overturn the lawful national elections and received an encouraging response from the latter. Since Mrs. Thomas is married to Justice Clarence Thomas (often considered to be the most conservative Supreme Court judge at the present), this new revelation has sparked a conversation about the growing right-wing influence on the highest court in the land.
The conversation is currently being considered by the January 6 Committee as one of the thousands of documents implying a widespread and organised push for an unlawful coup attempt by Republican extremists. It was first reported to the public by the CNN, with the content of its 29 messages being leaked by the Washington Post. The conversation took place in November 2020, and was followed by one text approximately four days after the Capital attack.
Virginia ‘Ginni’ Thomas is a low-level conservative activist known for working with several right-wing organizations in the country. She has been especially active in the past few years, and is known for her vocal support of the former President Donald J. Trump. In fact, Thomas disclosed her presence at the D.C. rally on January 6, 2021, earlier this month, claiming she did not participate in the planning or execution of the later assault on the Capitol building. Unsurprisingly, her recently unveiled conversation with Mr. Meadows is replete with QAnon references and repeatedly-debunked claims about widespread fraud in the 2020 elections. She expressed confidence in the conspiratorial views that the democratically-elected President Joe Biden and other senior officials will soon be arrested and sent to the Guantanamo Bay, using the stop-the-steal dogwhistle term ‘Release the Kraken’, among others.
So far, the conversation or her views have not been linked to the oldest-sitting Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, but there are clear signs of potential influence that have caused some anxiety. Justice Thomas was the only judge who dissented in the Court’s February 2021 decision to throw away Mr. Trump’s legal efforts to void the election. Similarly, he was the only one who voted against releasing the records of the Trump White House related to the January 6th incident this January.
