Earlier that same day in St. Louis, community members celebrated civic restoration milestones at Fountain Park, where the historic fountain resumed operation and the tornado-damaged Martin Luther King Jr. statue was re-erected.

Michael Brown Sr. Joins Community in Rebuilding Canfield Green Memorial in Ferguson

Community members, activists, and local supporters gathered at the Canfield Green Apartments in Ferguson, Missouri, to rebuild the memorial dedicated to Michael Brown Jr. Organizers expect the site to expand in the coming days and remain a focal point of remembrance through the upcoming weekend.

Honoring a Legacy Through Community Action

The reconstruction efforts were spearheaded by The Michael Brown Sr. Chosen For Change Organization, which mobilized volunteers to prepare the space ahead of the annual “Legacy Weekend” events. Supporters brought flowers, signs, and personal tributes to honor the life and legacy of Michael Brown Jr.

During the event, Michael Brown Sr. addressed those gathered, expressing deep gratitude for the volunteers who dedicated their time, hands, and hearts to keeping his son’s memory alive. He emphasized that the community’s continued support helps turn collective pain into purpose, ensuring the movement for justice and remembrance moves forward.

Earlier in the Day:

Fountain Park RestorationBefore the evening memorial rebuild in Ferguson, community members gathered at Fountain Park earlier in the day to mark major restoration milestones in the neighborhood.

The historic park’s central fountain was officially back in working order, spraying water once again as a symbol of neighborhood renewal. Additionally, the Martin Luther King Jr. statue—which had previously suffered severe damage during a past tornado—now stands fully restored and proudly upright in the center of the park, serving as a dual backdrop of resilience for the day’s community events.

A Decadelong Impact on Ferguson

Michael Brown Jr., an unarmed 18-year-old Black man, was shot and killed by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson on August 9, 2014. The incident sparked global protests, fueled the modern Black Lives Matter movement, and placed a nationwide spotlight on police accountability and racial justice.

Despite the passage of time, the Ferguson community continues to gather annually to ensure his memory remains a catalyst for systemic change and youth empowerment through events like the memorial rebuild and the Chosen For Change foundation’s outreach.
