Elon Musk continues to expand his artificial intelligence empire. However, this growth comes with a heavy cost. The NAACP recently filed a lawsuit against his company, xAI. They warn that Black neighborhoods now face much dirtier air. Specifically, xAI operates unpermitted gas turbines to run a massive data center near Memphis. Consequently, these turbines pump toxic pollution into majority-Black communities. These areas already deal with too much dirty air.

This lawsuit highlights a deeper tension in the current AI boom. We must see who profits from innovation and who pays with their health. In the Memphis region, Black communities carry that burden once again.

Furthermore, the area around the Tennessee-Mississippi border serves as the heart of Musk’s plans. He wants to build a rapidly growing AI data center empire here. Yet, his plan to power a supercomputer with fossil fuels hit a major snag.

Last week, the NAACP sued xAI over these actions. They claim the company runs dozens of unpermitted, gas-powered turbines. These machines supply electricity to Colossus 2. This facility is a new, supersized AI data center near Memphis. Therefore, the suit argues the turbines will spew tons of pollution. This smog will cover residential areas and expose people to harmful chemicals.

‘Death Sentence’ for Health

Abre’ Conner directs environmental and climate justice for the NAACP. She stated that Musk’s company follows a shameful and familiar pattern. Essentially, xAI asks Black and frontline communities to bear the toxic brunt of innovation. Meanwhile, two influential nonprofits actively support the civil rights group in this lawsuit. The Southern Environmental Law Center and Earth Justice provide vital legal assistance.

A data center should never become a death sentence for a community’s health, Connor emphasized. Clearly, she noted, xAI wants to evade clean air laws. They choose to operate dirty turbines that release known carcinogens into the air.
