Meet the Doctor Behind NasaClip™: A Solution for Nosebleeds

We are excited to introduce Dr. Elizabeth Clayborne, an Emergency Medicine Physician and the founder and CEO of NasaClip. As we enter nosebleed season, which typically runs from October through March, her invention is more relevant than ever. Dr. Clayborne, also known as Dr. Liz, reports that “currently, there’s about a third of U.S. households where someone has common, recurrent nosebleeds.”

Her solution, NasaClip, is a convenient, easy-to-use device that quickly stops nosebleeds in any setting. Dr. Clayborne explains that the device combines customized external nasal compression with pre-medicated sponges containing Oxymetazoline that are inserted into the nose. Ultimately, she aims to make this product readily available for every parent and caregiver.

From Medical Ethics to Emergency Medicine

Dr. Elizabeth Clayborne is not only a doctor but also a mother, CEO, leader, and woman of color. Raised in Denver, Colorado, she began her academic journey at Duke University. There, she designed her own major in Medical Ethics and Religion. Before attending medical school, she also completed a two-year research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. Her research in the Social and Behavioral Research Branch of the National Human Genome Research Institute focused on race, ethnicity, and genetics. Following this, Dr. Clayborne earned a dual MD/MA in Bioethics from Case Western Reserve University in just four years.

The Journey to Innovation

Dr. Clayborne completed her Emergency Medicine residency at the George Washington University Hospital, where she served as Chief Resident in her final year. Currently, she is a faculty member at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Department of Emergency Medicine. Her academic work centers on ethics, health policy, end-of-life care, and entrepreneurship.

It was during her residency that Dr. Liz first developed the novel nosebleed device, NasaClip. In 2015, she was awarded an NSF I-Corps grant, which helped launch her company, Emergency Medical Innovation, LLC. Furthermore, she participated in the TEDCO Builder Fund in 2020 and has successfully raised $2.5 million in funding as of September 2023.

Bringing NasaClip to the Public

Dr. Liz also received a National Science Foundation Small Business Innovation Research Phase I grant for $256,000 to aid in her device’s development. Consequently, the Class I version of NasaClip launched in July 2023 on NasaClip.com.

Beyond her work as an innovator, Dr. Clayborne is an active leader in the medical community. She is the former Chair of the MedChi Committee on Ethics and Judicial Affairs and serves on the Ethics Committee of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Additionally, she is a member of multiple academic and professional organizations. You may have seen her featured in national interviews on networks like CNN, MSNBC, and CBSN, where she discusses COVID-19, health equity, and ethical issues. She also delivered a TEDx talk on advance care planning titled: “How to protect your body and your doctor’s soul during COVID-19”.

Dr. Clayborne continues her career as a practicing emergency physician while championing healthcare policy reform. NasaClip is poised to become an essential item for daycare centers, elementary schools, and senior citizen facilities. You can follow her on Twitter and Instagram @DrElizPC.
