Early Life and Challenges
Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Glover’s childhood was filled with hardships. His father was frequently in and out of prison, leaving his mother to raise him on her own. Despite these struggles, Glover found solace in the arts. He participated in school drama classes and played the French horn, igniting a passion for entertainment. However, growing up in D.C. posed challenges, as there were limited opportunities for acting compared to cities like New York. Determined to make it, he took a leap of faith and began traveling to audition for roles beyond his hometown.
Breaking into Acting: The Wire
Glover’s big break came when his friend Jay Cooper, a former Teen Summit cast member, encouraged him to audition for The Wire. Initially reading for the role of Marlo Stanfield and other characters, he ultimately landed the part of Slim Charles.
“The Wire was one of my favorite shows,” Glover recalled. “That role opened up a lot of doors for me. It meant a lot.”
His portrayal of Slim Charles resonated deeply with audiences, and the show itself remains one of the greatest television series of all time. When asked about his favorite season, Glover pointed to Season 4, praising its accurate depiction of inner-city youth struggles. “It’s a reflection of what kids in urban communities go through all across America.”
Overcoming Violence and Personal Tragedy
Glover’s life off-screen has been filled with battles of its own. He has survived 13 gunshot wounds and four stabbings, a testimonial to the harsh realities of the streets.
“God most definitely has a purpose for me,” he said. “I had my own mind, and I think that’s what kept me moving in the right direction.”
Tragically, his younger brother, Tayon Glover, was murdered in 2007, and in August 2022, his son, Kavon Glover, was also killed in a shooting.
“Both deaths hit me hard,” Glover admitted. “My son was an excellent basketball player. Sometimes the streets take you to a place you can’t return from. I keep his name alive and take care of his daughter so she doesn’t ever have to want for anything. I do the same for my brother’s kids.”
A Role in History: 12 Years a Slave
Glover further showcased his acting talents in 12 Years a Slave, playing the role of Cape. The experience was profound for him.
“I got emotional twice,” he shared. “I asked to stay on set after I finished my parts because I wanted to see the production. Seeing what our ancestors had to endure—the beatings, the lynchings, the women being raped—it was painful. It’s a part of our history, and it was heartbreaking.”
Upcoming Projects and Giving Back
Glover continues to build on his career with new projects, including a D.C.-based series titled Brothers, where he will earn writing and directing credits. He is also working on his documentary, The Anwan Big G Glover Story, and has recently completed several voice-over projects for TV One.
Beyond entertainment, Glover is deeply involved in philanthropy. His nonprofit organization, Hugs Not Slugs, focuses on reducing violence and uplifting at-risk youth. He also remains active with BackYard Band, performing and keeping go-go music alive.
Staying Focused and Words of Wisdom
For Glover, the greatest challenge has been staying focused and avoiding the pull of the streets. “You can be here today and gone tomorrow,” he reflected. “Acting has made me so hungry, and I’m always in another city, always working. It’s a blessing to get away.”
When asked about his proudest achievement, he didn’t hesitate: “Being on television. Nobody ever thought I would be on TV, and now I’ve been on numerous shows.”
His advice to aspiring actors? “Study a lot, get some monologues down, and don’t get discouraged when you don’t get picked. Stick with it. One role can change your life.”
