Black History Month Kickoff Celebration: 2026 Afro World & New Awakening Event

Join the St. Louis community for an inspiring start to Black History Month. Specifically, the 2026 Afro World & New Awakening Black History Month Kickoff Celebration is a free event designed to honor our past. Furthermore, it serves to celebrate our present and build our future. Therefore, you should mark your calendar for Sunday, January 25, 2026. Join us for an afternoon of reflection, community, and culture at the New Awakening Church. Ultimately, this gathering is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the rich tapestry of African American history. Additionally, we will celebrate the figures who paved the way.

Honoring Carter G. Woodson’s Legacy

Black History Month exists largely thanks to the vision of historian Carter G. Woodson. In 1926, he launched ā€œNegro History Weekā€ for a specific purpose. He wanted to ensure the contributions of African Americans were recognized. Moreover, he believed these contributions should be taught in public schools and celebrated by the community. As a result, he argued that if a race has no history, it stands in danger of being exterminated. Eventually, his dedication expanded into the month-long observance we celebrate today. Thus, this kickoff event embraces Woodson’s mission. It does so by bringing people together to learn and honor the profound impact of African American history on our nation.

Event Highlights

The celebration promises a full and enriching afternoon for all who attend. To start, the festivities begin with a soulful lunch at 1:30 PM. This offers a chance for fellowship and connection before the main program.

Subsequently, at 2:00 PM, the program begins. It is hosted by actress and life coach Redina Medley and actor Victor D. Little. The event will feature an engaging panel discussion. In fact, it includes distinguished guests who have made significant contributions to our community and culture.

Guest panelists include:

  • Robin Boyce: She is a celebrated Radio & TV Journalist. Additionally, she is an Associate Director at 88.7 KSE-The Sound. Notably, Boyce is also a member of the Black Radio Hall of Fame.
  • Malik Ahmed: He is the founder of Better Family Life. Furthermore, he is the author of From the Projects to the Pyramids. Ahmed is a powerful voice for community empowerment and development.

This is a free community event, and everyone is welcome. However, please RSVP by calling 314-389-5194 to confirm your attendance.

Community Activities for All Ages

This celebration is designed for the entire family. For instance, free children’s books will be provided by Ready Readers to foster a love of reading. Additionally, the Courtney Chess Club will be on-site to host chess activities. This offers a fun way to engage young minds in strategic thinking. Consequently, these activities ensure that the event is not just a reflection on history. Instead, it is an investment in the next generation.

Preserving History: A Natural Bridge

The event’s theme, ā€œPreserving History. A Natural Bridge,ā€ speaks to the vital importance of connecting generations. We do this through shared stories and cultural heritage. Because it is held at the New Awakening Church at 8000 Natural Bridge, the event serves as a symbolic bridge. It links the foundational stories of African American history with contemporary community life. Therefore, preserving this history is essential for understanding our collective identity. It is also crucial for inspiring future leaders. For more on the power of storytelling, explore how narrative shapes our understanding of history.
