Mentorship in Action: Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Youth Leadership Program
Alpha Kappa Alpha YLI: Mentoring Future Leaders
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is actively shaping the next generation of changemakers. They achieve this through their innovative Youth Leadership Institute (YLI). Launched in 2023, this dynamic mentorship program targets a critical demographic. Specifically, it focuses on middle school children between the ages of 11 and 13.
Often, this group is overlooked in leadership development. However, by focusing on this formative stage, the sorority aims to instill confidence. Additionally, they build civic awareness and leadership skills. Ultimately, these tools will serve these students well into their future careers.
How Alpha Kappa Alpha Is Shaping Future Leaders
The transition from childhood to adolescence is a pivotal time. Therefore, the YLI program recognizes that middle school students need specific guidance. This support helps them navigate their educational and personal growth effectively. Consequently, Alpha Kappa Alpha designed this initiative as an interactive, hands-on experience.
Rather than passive learning, students engage directly with mentors. These mentors guide them through a robust curriculum. It is based on leadership training, career exploration, and environmental education.
Kiahna W. Davis, the Central Regional Director for the sorority, emphasized the importance of this specific age group.
“The middle school years can be very challenging for young people,” Davis noted. She further explained that the institute provides the necessary tools for students. It helps them become “strong, thoughtful and compassionate leaders now and in their future endeavors.”
Key Activities in the Mentorship Program
The curriculum goes beyond standard classroom learning. In fact, mentors within the Alpha Kappa Alpha network facilitate a wide range of activities. These are designed to broaden the students’ horizons significantly.
Participants engage in:
- Vision Board Creation: Students visually map out their future goals. This creative process helps them articulate their dreams and aspirations.
- Civic Engagement: Field trips to meet state legislators are a key component. They allow youth to see firsthand how policy decisions are made. Furthermore, they see how those decisions impact their communities.
- Career Exploration: Professionals from various fields share insights about their careers. Additionally, there are sessions on job searching, interviewing techniques, and dressing for success.
- Community Service: Hands-on projects include food drives and tree planting events. These activities instill a lifelong commitment to giving back.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Central Region Impact

Building a Legacy of Service and Leadership
The success of the YLI program is rooted in the rich history of the organization itself. Founded in 1908 on the campus of Howard University, Alpha Kappa Alpha holds a special place in history. It is the nation’s first and oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-educated women.
With over 118 years of history and more than 300,000 members internationally, the sorority continues to evolve. It adapts its programming to meet modern needs. Thus, the Youth Leadership Institute is a testament to this adaptability. As Davis added, the engagement opportunities students experience today are crucial. They are “building the groundwork for each participant to be the next generation of legacy changemakers.”
Supporting the Next Generation
Investing in youth leadership is essential for a thriving community. The YLI program equips middle schoolers with the confidence to lead among their peers. Furthermore, it gives them the knowledge to navigate their futures. As a result, the program creates tangible pathways to success.
Whether through environmental stewardship or civic participation, these students are learning an important lesson. They are learning that their voices matter.
