Governor Kehoe commemorates National 988 Day and Suicide Prevention Awareness Month by illuminating the Capitol Dome in teal and purple, highlighting the importance of mental health support and crisis intervention.

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Governor Mike Kehoe has ordered the Missouri State Capitol dome to shine teal and purple, beginning at sunset on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, through sunrise on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, in recognition of National 988 Day.
The lighting raises awareness of the support available through 988 for mental health and substance use crises and highlights suicide prevention efforts across Missouri.
“Missourians have always looked out for one another, especially when times are tough,” said Governor Kehoe. “On National 988 Day, we want every Missourian to know that help is one call or text away. Each of us has a role to play in supporting our families, friends, and neighbors and encouraging those who need help to reach out.”
The Missouri 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a free and confidential three-digit service providing 24/7, statewide access to crisis support by call, text, chat, or videophone. Trained crisis specialists are available to assist individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts, substance use concerns, mental health crises, or other emotional distress.
“You don’t have to personally be experiencing a crisis to reach out,” said Val Huhn, Director of the Department of Mental Health. “Trained specialists will listen without judgment, provide support, offer coping techniques, and connect you with local resources. Your reason is reason enough to reach out to 988.”
Governor Kehoe has also proclaimed September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Suicide prevention touches every part of life – from families and schools to workplaces, faith communities, and health care systems. When people feel connected, valued, and supported, they are more likely to seek help. When communities come together, lives are saved.
