What began as an effort to fill a gap in North St. Louis County has grown into one of the region’s most anticipated Juneteenth celebrations.

According to organizer Twyla Lee, the vision for JuneteenthSTL in Dellwood started in 2021, at a time when Juneteenth celebrations were still relatively uncommon throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area.

“I’ve always believed in staying in my own lane and looking for opportunities to create something unique rather than duplicating what others are doing,” Lee said.

Dellwood quickly emerged as the ideal location. With its outdoor skating rink, recreation center, and ample parking, the city offered a space capable of bringing families together during a period when communities were still navigating the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The inaugural event, branded as the Bridge the Gap314 x Educators Who Hustle Juneteenth Pop-Up, was designed to be more than a celebration. It aimed to connect residents with resources, create opportunities for local businesses, and provide a family-centered gathering space.

“What was missing before this was a family-centered community resource event that brought people together in a meaningful way,” Lee explained.

Six years later, that vision continues to resonate.

This year’s JuneteenthSTL celebration drew another strong turnout, with hundreds of residents, families, vendors, community organizations, and elected officials gathering in Dellwood. Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed live entertainment, food vendors, youth activities, community resources, and the annual parade.

For Lee, the continued support is a reflection of the trust and investment the community has made in the event.

“For six consecutive years, hundreds to thousands of people have come out to support JuneteenthSTL in the City of Dellwood,” she said. “What makes that support even more meaningful is that we’ve been able to create a safe, family-friendly environment without any negative incidents.”

While attendees experience the celebration itself, Lee noted that much of the work happens behind the scenes. Building an event of this scale requires navigating competing priorities, maintaining focus on the mission, and ensuring the event remains centered on education, unity, reflection, and community empowerment.

Despite those challenges, she remains focused on serving the community.

“At the end of the day, JuneteenthSTL was built to serve families, celebrate our culture, and create opportunities for people to come together,” Lee said.

The event also continues to provide opportunities for local entrepreneurs and small businesses. Vendors lined the festival grounds throughout the day, offering food, merchandise, and services while connecting directly with residents.

Beyond the festivities, the celebration served as a reminder of the strength and vibrancy of North St. Louis County. Families gathered together, young people participated in activities and performances, and community leaders engaged directly with residents in a shared space.

Looking ahead, Lee’s vision remains ambitious. She hopes to continue expanding partnerships, increasing community engagement, and growing the annual parade into a nationally recognized attraction.

“My big vision is to see the JuneteenthSTL Parade become one of the premier parades in the country,” Lee said. “Every great movement starts with a vision.”

Based on six years of steady growth, community support, and continued investment, JuneteenthSTL appears well-positioned to remain a cornerstone celebration for Dellwood and North St. Louis County for years to come.
