Faith, Community, and History: The Legacy of The Rock Church

St. Alphonsus Liguori stands as a pillar of strength in St. Louis. While the rough-cut stone building commands attention, the true power of The Rock Church comes from its people. Over the decades, remarkable leaders and historic events have shaped this vibrant parish.

One of the most inspiring figures in the church’s history is Fr. Maurice Nutt. He actually grew up in the parish, deeply rooted in its traditions. In 1990, he experienced a profound full-circle moment. African-American Bishop J. Terry Steib ordained him to the priesthood right at The Rock. Just three years later, in 1993, Fr. Nutt made history again. He became the first African-American Pastor of the church. His appointment brought authentic leadership from within the community, marking a new era of celebration and local representation.

The excellence of this congregation soon caught the attention of the entire country. In 2000, leaders evaluated 20,000 parishes across the United States. They selected St. Alphonsus as one of only 300 Excellent Catholic Parishes. This massive honor proved what the local community already knew. The Rock Church shines as a model of faith, culture, and dedication.

The parish also earned the prestigious I Dare You Award from the Danforth Foundation. The Rock became the very first recipient of this unique honor, which included a generous $100,000 grant to support their ongoing mission. To make the occasion even more special, the church hosted Rev. Bernice King, daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as the guest speaker. Her powerful presence brought deep inspiration to everyone who attended and cemented the event as a major milestone in local history.

When we look at these incredible people and major events, we see a clear picture of greatness. The Rock Church does much more than just host Sunday Mass. You can feel the rich history, bold leadership, and active community spirit the moment you walk through the doors.
