Jean-Michel rose to prominence in the 1980s as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century who was a part of the Neo-expressionism movement. This was a movement that expressed the deep meanings of wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experiences. It’s amazing that this generation gets to finally experience this expression one more time. The family of Jean is presenting an exhibition of his work for the first time in years! It will be titled Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure. The exhibit will open in early Spring 2022 at the NYC landmark, the Starrett-Lehigh Building and will feature over 200 never seen and rare paintings, drawings, and multimedia presentations. The exhibit will also include ephemera and artifacts that will show an intimate and multidimensional portrait of Jean-Michel that can only be told by his family. This is how it should be done. Let them family exhibit because the family knows!
“We wanted to bring his work and personality forward, in a way only his family can, for people to immerse themselves in,” shares Jean-Michel’s sister Lisane Basquiat. “We want this to be a multi-dimensional celebration of Jean-Michel’s life.”
The great thing about this exhibition is what it represents. Jean-Michel’s work is the epitome of NYC. The city is his birthplace, as well as the backdrop of his successful career. NYC is the perfect place for this to happen. It’s only right!
