I was devastated to learn of the passing of Irene Cara, though the cause of death is not determined. It is so sad to learn of our heroes that we have grown up to love have died. And so YOUNG!
My fondest memories of her was her portrayal of the youngest sibling Sparkle in Sparkle. Her voice was like that of a starling, it was so crisp and sweet.
Who was Irene Cara?
Cara was born in The Bronx, New York City, the youngest of five children. Her father, Gaspar Escalera, a factory worker and retired saxophonist, was Puerto Rican, and her mother, Louise, a movie theater usher, was Cuban.
Irene Cara, the iconic voice behind hit movie soundtrack songs, ‘Fame’ and ‘Flashdance’ and ‘What a Feeling?’ Cara married stuntman and film director Conrad Palmisano in Los Angeles in April 1986. They divorced in 1991
Some first saw her as Coco in Fame, (younger generation hasn’t seen Sparkles yet) then as Sparkle, but she was always the sweet Irene Cara.
Cara died at her home in Largo, Florida, on November 25, 2022.R.I.P.
