Our circumstances often lead us, as well as those on the outside looking in, to believe that we are losing instead of winning the battles we face. This is true in every aspect of our lives, including health and fitness. As we look around at the state of our personal affairs, logic and reason says everything is out of order instead of picture perfect. For example, you might feel as though your marriage is not good enough, your kids are not smart enough, your salary should be higher, your neighborhood should be nicer, or the twenty-five (25) pounds you lost was nothing. The list of shortcomings will never end because the enemy will keep spewing them.

Choose not to listen to the negative voice of the enemy who seeks to make you ungrateful and dissatisfied with the blessings God has given you. No, you may not have arrived at your ideal weight yet or be set free from an eating disorder, but that does not mean you will not. It simply means God has a plan and a purpose for your life, and He knows how much you can handle.

In Exodus 23:29-31, God explained why He does not allow us to progress too quickly: “But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you. Little by little, I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land. I will establish your borders from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, and from the desert to the Euphrates River. I will give into your hands the people who live in the land, and you will drive them out before you.”

This Biblical principle is so important in our lives that God repeated it in the Book of Deuteronomy. “The Lord your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little. You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you” (Deuteronomy 7:22). In other words, God is not going to elevate you, enlarge your territory, let you reach your health and fitness goals, or otherwise bless you beyond what you are able to handle.

If He allows the new season of favor and blessings to come too quickly, it will overrun you, meaning it will corrupt you.

This is not a new principle. We see it every day with people who have not earned their success. For example, they are often arrogant, rude, elitist, ungrateful, and corrupt. They lack humility, patience, kindness, and self-control.

When it comes to health and fitness, the newly fit and trim people can be just as mean, hateful, and judgmental as the rest of the world, quickly forgetting how that behavior made them feel in the very recent past.

Conversely, those who struggle to possess the territory learn to trust God, to thank Him for what they have accomplished so far, have no respect of persons, and remain humble in addition to bearing the fruit of the Spirit. To put it plainly, the beasts represent the sinful nature within you, and that evil nature will run wild unless you allow God to cultivate, develop, and mature the fruit of the Spirit within you as you defeat the giant of eating disorders, overweight, and obesity related diseases in your life to gain more health and fitness territory.

Therefore, be patient and trust that your current situation is not your final destination. In due season, you will declare as the Israelites did that, “The Lord gave them rest on every side, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers, and no one of all their enemies stood before them; the LORD gave all their enemies into their hand” (Joshua 21:44).
