With the country being on the verge of World War 3, the invasion of Ukraine by Russian President Vladimir Putin has caused catastrophic damage. And has dire consequences that will not only affect our country but the black community as well.

African Americans across the United States will bear the brunt of the retaliation, especially in poverty-stricken neighborhoods. Moreover, blacks are very concerned.

For starters, the price of gas will rise higher. Russia is the second-largest exporter of oil in the world behind the United States.

This Russian attack has already triggered stiff sanctions by President Joe Biden. Even though the United States is not a heavy consumer of Russian oil.

Crude oil is traded globally and prices are determined based on world oil prices, this in turn will cause the prices to rise at the gas stations.

Also, Russia is the world’s top wheat exporter. Ukraine and Russia together make up about 29% of the global wheat export market. Intensifying sanctions against Russia could disrupt the food trade with significant consequences for global food stability that would cause food prices to jump up.

With reports of 40 soldiers and 10 civilians killed, many are asking how should the U.S and other countries respond? If Russia is able to take over Ukraine, it would represent a huge setback for democracy worldwide and pose a great threat to the 1949 NATO Treaty.

Many believe that participating in a full-fledged war could be damaging geographically and economically. There is also concern that Russia could launch cyber-attacks against the U.S. The United States is treading carefully in the decisions they are making on how to react to Putin.

The majority of the countries believe strict sanctions and strategic plans are the way to prevent a war with Russia. It will help handicap Putin from using resources to keep this attack up.

The United States has sent thousands of troops to Central and Eastern Europe. Black families are fearing for their loved ones as 2,000 Soldiers from Fort Bragg’s 82nd Airborne Division have been deployed to Europe.

This division consists of a multitude of African American soldiers. They are equipped to deter aggression and to defend and reassure allies.

Although the rap community hasn’t spoken out heavily on the Russia and Ukraine crisis, Rap artist Cardi B has been very vocal stating “Wish these world leaders stop tripping about power and really think about who’s really getting affected (citizens) besides the whole world is in a crisis. War, sanctions, and invasions should be the last thing these leaders should worry about.”

Experts believe that we have to change our approach to handling Putin because they assume he smells fear and that he is an opportunist that will take advantage of any situation that benefits him. One thing for certain is the world is on edge and people are paying close attention to the decisions that are being made.
