In a move that has sparked controversy, the Supreme court ruled to abolish the legal right to abortion just a day after promoting gun rights in the gun regulation ruling. Both verdicts portray a heavy inclination toward the Left-winged political spectrum. Are political ideologies suppressing women’s freedom over their bodies while increasing gun freedom?

The supreme court overturned the Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion by 6 conservative majority judges versus 3 liberal minorities. Justice Samuel Alito pointed out that it was “egregiously wrong” and stated that “Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue.” On the other hand, the court’s majority said that they had to consider gun owners’ rights and not just that of local officials, county sheriffs, and others who fear that too many guns on the streets are a threat to public safety.

It struck down the New York law that required people to show a special need to acquire a license to carry a concealed outgun while outside the home. The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association had filed a lawsuit arguing that this law violated the 14th amendment.

Wasn’t the same logic applied to gun rights denied for the ruling of fetal viability that was at the center of the Mississippi abortion case? According to the pro-abortion policy group Guttmacher institute, which tracks national abortion statistics, an estimated 26 states are likely to ban abortion.

At the same time, the overturned gun law will loosen firearm policy restrictions in at least 7 states. These verdicts have caused a public uproar. Celebrities have taken to social media to express their distaste for what seems as limiting women’s freedom while heightening that of guns.

On her Instagram account, Kim Kardashian wrote that “In America, guns have more rights than women.” Taylor Swift tweeted: “I’m absolutely terrified that this is where we are – that after so many decades of people fighting for women’s rights to their bodies, today’s decision has stripped us of that.”

Not only is a pro-gun verdict likely to promote violence, but the United Nations also said that the anti-abortion judgment is “a huge blow to women’s human rights and gender equality.” Increased access to firearms is likely to promote gun violence. At least 500 lives are lost daily to gunfire.

This move will affect how people interact in public places such as theaters and subways. Similarly, the abortion decision has been left to the state. This will endanger the mental and physical well-being of women who will procure abortion services illegally.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), unsafe abortion practices are the largest contributor to maternal death. Besides, there are other risks involved, such as the doctor being arrested and facing the probability of a fine or imprisonment.

Yet, this is preventable. DICK’S Sporting Goods are dedicated to ensuring safe and ready access to these benefits to all persons covered by their medical plan. Cover includes benefits of up to $4,000 in travel expense reimbursement to the nearest State where abortion is legal.

What example is the American justice system displaying to other countries? According to Joe Biden, the U.S. President, “With this decision, the conservative majority of the Supreme Court shows how far removed they are from the majority of this country. They have made the United States an outlier among developed countries.”
