How Detroit For Life’s Project Clean Slate is Changing lives

Employment rejection letters were piling up.

Opportunities slipped away before he was given a fair shake. But Detroiter Michael Bell knew why. His past was holding him back.

“I tried to do the expungement process on my own. I felt like I was being sent on a wild goose chase,” until he heard about Project Clean Slate.

Project Clean Slate (PCS) is a free program that assists people in Detroit in removing their criminal record and making it easier for them to find better jobs, homes, and education.

Once a client’s case is reviewed by PCS and deemed eligible, they are walked through
the process to finalize expungement.

Since 2021, more than 10,000 Detroiters have registered with PCS with participants seeing an average wage increase of 23% after one year.

“As a result of Project Clean Slate, I’ve been able to advance my [engineering] career. It was a seamless process,” said Bell.
