Feeling trapped in a cycle of unhealthy eating? Explore how Jesus can unlock freedom and guide you towards a healthy life that glorifies Him.

I have never been to jail, but the thought of being held in a place against my will and denied permission to leave is not a very pleasant one. Most people share that sentiment. The concept of imprisonment, in and of itself, is enough to deter the majority of the population from committing a crime. However, we do not apply that same logic to spiritual prisons, most likely because most people are not even aware spiritual prisons exist or that they are imprisoned in one.

Over the course of your life, there has been at least one sin that you could not shake no matter what you did. More than likely, there have been several. No matter how hard you tried, you just could not stop doing it. For example, for some people, it is fornicating. For others, it is stealing. There are even those who enjoy lying or gossiping so much that they cannot quit despite the trouble it brings into their lives. For you, it is probably something related to food, namely, gluttony, making an idol of your stomach and food, or otherwise failing to take care of your body which is the temple of the Holy Spirit by eating and drinking for the glory of God. When that happens, you are in bondage to the sin. In other words, you experience spiritually what a criminal experiences physically once he is caught, imprisonment.

You want to walk away and leave the eating disorder or overindulgence in unhealthy foods and beverages behind, but it is like an iron shackle has been placed around your ankle that only allows you to move a few feet in all directions. You want to tear your eyes away from the wicked thing before you (Psalm 101:3), but the iron mask covering your head limits your vision.  Consequently, your eyes remain fixed upon the objects of your evil desires, meaning all of your favorite sugar-laden, fried, and/or fat-filled foods, for example. Even if you could escape from the physical restraints, you must still contend with the ungodly guards at the prison door blocking the locked exit.

It is not that you have not tried to escape from bondage. For instance, on occasion, you have managed to get the shackles off your feet long enough to run 15, 25, or 50 pounds of fat away, only to be captured, put back in your cell, and regain every ounce you lost. At one point, you received parole for good behavior, but you returned to your old eating habits after being set free. As a result, you are back in bondage again.

It seems like you are in a revolving prison door which opens briefly then abruptly closes before you can permanently escape. However, there is a way out. Jesus has the keys to permanently unlock the health and fitness prison you are in, and He will not drag you back once He sets you free. Whom the Son sets free is free indeed (John 8:36)!
