Biopics have always fascinated me because you get an insider’s look into some of your favorite artists’ lives.

For me, there have been many great voyeuristic films like The Jacksons: An American Dream, The Temptations, and Get on Up.

MGM has added to that great collection by releasing the trailer for the highly-anticipated biopic about Aretha Franklin called “Respect.”

The film Respect takes you on a journey throughout the life of the Queen of Soul, from being a singer in her father’s church choir to becoming one of the most influential, internationally-recognizedm multi-genre megastars.

This motion picture is stacked with an all-star-studded cast, featuring Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin.

Not only was Hudson ecstatic about playing the role of this icon, but this film became her first role as an executive producer. Rounding out the cast, the film includes  Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Marc Maron, Tituss Burgess, and Mary J. Blige.  This film is directed by Liesl Tommy.

I believe this film will be epic. It captures the depths and complexity of the Queen’s life. I feel Aretha Franklin is a representation of most young women maturing into their personal greatness.

Jennifer Hudson gives one of her most stellar performances to date in capturing the true essence of Ms. Franklin.  What I like about the movie trailer the most is not only did it share her triumphs, but it showed you her challenges, such as becoming a teenage mom, dealing with personal relationships, and navigating through the rough waters of the music business.

I’m excited for you to see how the Queen found her voice, how she walked through all of life’s obstacles and found her authentic voice that captured the admiration of fans, catapulting her into stardom.

Respect is slated to premiere in theaters on August 13th, 2021.
