Our Mother of Perpetual Help has been a well-known Byzantine icon in the Catholic church for centuries. This icon, which shows the Blessed Virgin Mary holding a young Jesus, symbolizes miracles and triumph over suffering. In the icon, a person sees Mary comforting Jesus, who has seen the adversity of the world.

Those of the Catholic religion pray to Our Mother of Perpetual Help during times of need, and they find comfort in knowing that she is always there to extend her assistance. Furthermore, Catholics’ devotion to Our Mother of Perpetual Help believe that the blessings received from Mary come directly from Christ.

This icon of Mary and Jesus dates back to approximately the 15th century, with origins in the Keras Kardiotissa Monastery. Our Mother of Perpetual Help came to Rome in 1499 and is currently enshrined in the Redemptorist Church of St. Alphonsus Liguori

Given its Canonical Coronation by Pope Pius IX, the head of the Catholic church between 1846 and 1878, the Redemptorists have been entrusted with protecting this holy icon.

There are various symbolic elements in the icon, such as:

  • The star on Mary’s veil – Symbolic of the arrival of Jesus Christ
  • Mary’s eyes – Shows the love Jesus has for mankind
  • The garments of Jesus – The colors he wears are like that of a king

Novenas, or devotional prayer, are performed on a weekly basis to the Virgin Mary. They primarily come from prayer booklets, or the prayers can be recited throughout the day.

In an article by The Divine Mercy, it’s said that “Novenas also can help us to focus our intentions so that we can more effectively give thanks for God’s response to our needs.”

These powerful devotions are significant in the Catholic church and play a huge role in its congregants’ worship of Jesus Christ.

On Tuesdays at 11:30 am The St. Alphonsus Liguori “Rock” Catholic Church in St. Louis, Missouri holds Our Mother of Perpetual Help Novena & Mass. This holy icon reminds Catholics that they are never alone, and that Jesus is always with them as they move throughout life.
