The WNBA season may be over, but women’s basketball is still going strong. Team USA is playing in the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. The event takes place in Sydney, Australia, and will go on from September 22 to October 1, as teams will compete for gold.

USA won the last FIBA World Cup (which was in 2018) to win their third straight cup and 10th overall. Now, players like A’ja Wilson and Chelsea Gray (of the championship winning Las Vegas Aces) look to add to the legacy. And recently, Team USA made history with a huge win. On Monday, USA beat South Korea 145-69. Brazil previously held the record for most points scored in a game with 143. Brazil beat Malaysia 143-50 to move on to the semifinals. This happened during the 1990 World Cup. But after an impressive performance from the U.S., that record was broken.

Connecticut Sun forward Brionna Jones led the team with 24 points and was one of eight players to score in double figures. Team USA was firing on all cylinders, and had an incredible performance in the process. Wilson (who had 20 points) spoke on their performance after the game.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been part of a team that can score the basketball like this,” Wilson said. “This is crazy; we put up 145 points. I think when you look at us and just knowing how talented we are, we just came together, and we play together very, very well.”

USA has picked up some great wins over teams such as Belgium, Puerto Rico, China and more. Their most recent win was a 121-59 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their next opponent is Serbia, who they will face Wednesday during the quarter finals.

Team USA is on a mission and with their recent play, it is only a matter of time before they reach their goal.
